Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow 1-0 win over Angola on Friday. The only goal of the game came from Ademola Lookman, who scored his third of the tournament with a low shot from the edge of the box in the 63rd minute.
The Super Eagles dominated possession and had more chances, but it was hard to break down a resilient Angola defense. Victor Osimhen missed a couple of headers and also had an offside goal cancelled by the referee, while Moses Simon and Frank Onyeka also went close. Angola, who topped their group ahead of Algeria, tried to hit Nigeria on the counter-attack, but lacked the finishing touch. Their best opportunity fell to Mabululu, who was denied by a superb save from Stanley Nwabali in the fourth minute of the game.
Nigeria will now face the winner of the quarter-final between DR Congo and Guinea, while Angola will return home with their heads held high after a remarkable run in the competition. Lookman, who switched his allegiance from England to Nigeria last year, is now the joint top scorer of the tournament with four goals. He will be hoping to add to his tally and lead Nigeria to their fourth AFCON title.
